26th September 2016, Bangkok– Youth Voices Count (YVC) is proud to announce the implementation of 9 small scale projects in 9 countries in Asia and the Pacific region including Bhutan, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The projects are implemented as part of the IGNITE! Mentorship program launched by YVC in 2015. IGNITE! is consisted of 9 mentees who will be the implementers of these small scale projects extending for a maximum period of 6 months and they will be supported by 9 mentors from their own locations.
The small scale projects are financially supported by the ViiV Health Care under the Positive Action for MSM and transgender program and additional technical support for the implementation of the projects is provided by APCOM Foundation, one of the long standing supporters of YVC.
The projects focus on “small steps” to address issues that are closer to the lives of young gay men and young transgender people in the 9 countries. Together the projects address issues such as violence faced by gay and transgender students at school settings, creating youth friendly HIV health services, raising awareness and mobilizing young gay and young transgender people. One of the projects is unique in its approach to reaching young transgender men with information on transition, rights and health. A main objective of the small scale projects is to facilitate a process where the mentees can acquire hands-on experience on project development, implementation, monitoring and finances.
The IGNITE! Mentorship program is unique it its approach to capacity building and developing a new generation of young leaders in the region. The two-year program is based on 4 workshops and are supplemented by 2 rounds of small scale projects and regular webinars. Each mentee is connected with a mentor in their own locations to facilitate easy communication and hands on mentoring. The projects were developed by the mentees as a result of the 2nd IGNITE! Workshop with the support of their mentors and the YVC secretariat. The funds for each project implementation is hosted by a fiscal host organization in each country which acts as a second mentor for the mentee in handling finances.
IGNITE! mentorship program aims to develop the next set of young gay and young transgender leaders in the region. The small scale projects provide them with the opportunity to learn and practice the dynamics of project design, implementation and monitoring which will be crucial skills for their journey as young leaders.
